RV Caravan Tours:
A Teardrop Adventure
- by Teri Fahrendorf
24 DAYS ON THE ROAD - Page 16
Drove back to Eugene
via scenic Hwy 126 through the resort town of Sisters, and then over the
lava wonderland of the McKenzie Pass. This is my home turf, and in a certain
way I felt like I was seeing it for the first time. There were lots of
cars at Proxy Falls and along the McKenzie River. It was an absolutely
gorgeous Indian summer day, and everyone was out enjoying it. Got home
about 2:30 pm. Didn't want to end the day, and the trip, by immediately
unpacking, so I walked downtown; about three miles roundtrip. It was Sunday,
the last day of Eugene's big annual party known as, "The Eugene Celebration."
Ordered a falafel and a fruit smoothie at a food stand.
It was Sunday, September
19, 1999. A fine day: a perfect (and safe) end to a beautiful and imperfect
trip. That night as I lay in my own bed in my little house, I tried to
sleep but I missed the cool air on my face and the smell of pine needles.
I stared at the ceiling, but it couldn't match the stars I had watched
through the teardrop's vent hatch. And no matter how hard I listened;
I just couldn't catch the distant yips of any coyotes at all. Eventually
I drifted off to sleep; tomorrow was a workday and I would need the rest
to catch up with work, and to unpack and clean the teardrop.
The tapestry is now
complete. Thank you for joining me on this literary version of my journey.
I hope you enjoyed the story. Happy Trails!
The End.
